Welcome Y'all!
A three night stay at Cooper Lake State Park in Sulphur Springs a Northeast Texas city was how my long weekend ended up. Getting there from Central Texas was a journey on its own but what made it interesting is the tiny cities that were on the way with farmlands, cattle and sunsets. Remember this was also the Christmas season and I made it to a hand-full of holiday lights with the streets empty. This was dreamy and magical, not to mention how grateful I am for being able to travel and experience this. Do read Holiday Lights from 10 Texas Cities if you were not able to travel or pass it along to a loved one who may enjoy seeing the lights virtually.
About Cooper Lake State Park - if you love fishing, swimming or boating, you will be thrilled to be able to do all of them plus a beautiful view. This State Park offers many close to nature moments and is so underrated.
Sunset Cove Day Use Area
-------------------------------------------------
Be it a cup of coffee with a loved one, cooling off after a hike or just chillin' to get in a zen mode, this day use area has benches, tall trees offering shade and a spectacular view like this. The walkway itself was damaged at the time I visited and was not accessible but I spent quiet sometime soaking up the beauty. Seriously, this is also a neat spot for instagrammable pictures, selfies and keepsake memories. Won't you agree?
Cabin Area
-------------------------------------------------
Having grown up by the beach most of my life, I thrive well in heat. I struggle during a cold front. Given how cold the weekend was, I went in for a Cabin instead of a screened shelter. It was a corner cabin by the South Sulphur unit & this is the view I had within 10 steps from the cabin and had it to myself all three days. Cabin had bunker beds, microwave, refrigerator & heater that I was so grateful for. Moon lights up the lake at night and the view is truly phenomenal.
Gull's Bluff Day Use Area
-------------------------------------------------
This is another space to boat or fish. However, there a play area right here with plenty, plenty of birds chirping all around. I caught a sight of northern cardinal and blue bird and the kiddo thought this was so cool.
Note
-------------------------------------------------
Park does not have a gate and they have a process for after hours check-in
The night skies are clear and the stars pop. If you are into astro-photography, you will love this place
If you are into bird photography, from pelicans, blue birds, vultures and cardinals, there are plenty of birds population here
A fantastic opportunity for kiddos to learn native Texas birds and constellations. Be sure to grab an explorer backpack
I did not hike this time but the Cayote Run Trail (4.6 miles) is said to offer fantastic view of the lake, uphill and bottoms
From Southwest Dairy Museum to Paris, TX there is plenty of attractions near this place and planning your trip ahead of time would help making the best out of this area. The museum, boating rentals and several other activities were not available due to covid-19. Be sure to give them a call before heading there.
