3 Things To Do At Canyon Lake, Texas

Welcome Y'all!

Trust all is well there for ya. This visit to Canyon Lake, TX happened by chance. What was going to be an early morning hike at Government Canyon State Park in San Antonio, TX did not happen due to Mr. Rain showing up when we hit the road. After eating and relaxing (all done in the car) we headed to Canyon Lake as Mr. Sun was shining on us with a huge smile.

Canyon Lake is in the vicinity of San Antonio and about 20 miles from New Braunfels, TX. The Lake itself is a dam and within a few miles of the overlook park is the dam and the hydroelectric plant. While this lake is a source of water supply, it is equally famous for water-based recreational activities.

Expect nothing but breathtaking views of Hill Country and stunning landscapes that transitions you to a peaceful mood, these scenes here truly brought joy to my soul! Let's look at all the information you need to plan your visit:

Canyon Lake Overlook

601 Coe Rd, Canyon Lake, TX 78133

Once you pull over here, there is parking right at the overlook area. There are couple of ways to make the best out of this area.

- Hike down the trails and access the lake. You can swim, dip toes or just bask up all the sun. You will evidently notice several signs emphasizing the importance of life jackets for the kiddos. Be sure to take along life jackets along with swimsuits.

- Sit by the overlook park (benches are in a few places) and feel the aerial vibes of the lake. There are so many birds here in additional to the vultures that add a character to this place. If you are into birding or enjoy nature sounds, this is a cool way to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Canyon Lake.

- Take a stroll down the access road. I highly recommend walking down the access road as it feels like you are in a fantasy world with Bahamas types lake views on one side and gorgeous hills on the other side. To make it dreamy, we had the sunset (golden hour has its magic no matter what) and dragonflies everywhere.

Guadalupe South Trail

16510 S Access Rd, Canyon Lake, TX 78133

If you know me, you know that I love hiking and exploring natural spaces on foot. Within the proximity of the overlook park is Guadalupe South Trail. Beautiful trails that reminded me so much of Riverplace Nature Trail near Austin. The landscape and steps in both the spaces are pretty similar. The trails take you down along the river, makes it easy to cool off in the river or take plenty of pictures, this is a very beautiful space and worth all the clicks.

Canyon Hydro Electric Plant

Right down the road from the overlook park and next to the Guadalupe South Trail is the Hydroelectric plant. You can spot it when walking the service roads. You get to see water gushing out fiercely and then the calm flow down the river. Tall trees and blue water make it a perfect spot for great pictures. Pack in the rods if you are game for fishing as well.

Exploring all these took us about 4 hours and we did not eat out. There are Hill Country cabins and resorts in the vicinity if you choose to spend a weekend or couple of days. This place is magical and calls for pictures with happy vibes only.
