Welcome Y'all!
Similar to Houston, Austin's suburban cities are gaining popularity and Pflugerville, pronounced /ˈfluːɡərvɪl/ is one of them. This land was home for German settler Henry Pfluger who settled down here with his family who predominantly farmed here. So goes the name pfluger meaning ploughland.
There are some pretty cool locally owned eat outs here and I am listing my top 5 that I frequent the most. There are several other eat-outs in the city and the below made by top 5 based on taste, cost and obviously vegetarian and vegan options.
Dazzle Coffee and Smoothie: If you are local to Pflugerville, there is no way you would have missed this cute little drive-thru coffee shop. They were only drive-thru even before covid days. My personal favorite are two things about this place. One, just the business model of a tiny store with local vibes and how cost plays into it. Two, they serve Pumpkin Spice Latte year-round. Are you kidding me? The wait for post-Thanksgiving release of Starbucks' PSL is real and Dazzle comes to rescue for those who appreciate the spices any time of the year. Their cold coffee blend aka Frezians are the best for Texas summer!
West Pecan Coffee + Beer: Say you are not a drive-thru person like me and prefer to dine-in, spend an evening with your BFF or just like to work out of a space that is not your home / office, WP is the place to go. Their interiors and not to forget their outdoor dining space, are amazing. They have got you covered from your caffeine needs to your mid-day snack cravings.
Taste of Ethiopia: This one is my comfort food, for reaaal! Being a vegetarian and an occasional vegan, their sampler for two is sooo good. The injeera bread (read super soft, fluffy and savory) is something I get seconds and thirds (no shame here) as they remind me of my hometown Uthappams (a south Indian Lentil delicacy). If you love coffee, do give their Ethiopian coffee a try. It can shake you and wake you up to get going after the food coma from all the injeras that went in. Do note, they do not offer utensils and encourage eating with your fingers. If you are wondering how this works, just make a taco shell out of the injeera and scoop the lentils or side you picked.
Baris Pasta and Pizza: This place is more than just NY style pizza. As a vegetarian, I don't often find a lot of Italian menu with vegetarian option, if you are like me, Baris is your place. My faves are spinach lasagna, their calzone and eggplant parmigiana. They offer subs and wine.
Taco-House: A breakfast and lunch place in the heart of Pflugerville with the menu priced affordably. What makes it so local, is the Pfunky tacos that are named after the streets in Pflugerville. Be prepared as there is a wait time as all the orders are made fresh. Heads-up - Parking around this area is limited, and they do take orders over the Pfone. Other all time favorites of mine that are not locally owned are: Einstein Bros Bagels, Torchy's Tacos and Ding Tea.
